João Machado

João Machado lives and works in Porto. He has a degree in Sculpture from the Porto School of Fine Arts, where he taught graphic design between 1976 and 1983, the year in which he left teaching to devote himself entirely to design.

Devoting himself exclusively to the graphic arts, he has developed an extensive body of work as a poster artist, illustrator and editorial designer, distinguishing himself through the originality of his graphic language, which combines various influences from pop art to Japanese art, through a unique mastery of colour and composition.

Bringing design closer to the visual arts, João Machado has focused on posters, but has also given attention to postage stamps and corporate design.

João Machado has exhibited his work in some of the world's most important galleries and museums and has been the recipient of numerous national and international awards and distinctions as an illustrator and designer , notably the ‘Icograda Award of Excellence 1999’ and the ‘Aziago International Award 2005’, which placed Portugal among the world's leading countries for the graphic and tourist quality of its stamps.

He is a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale and has also been awarded the title of Graphis Master. His work is referenced and reproduced in various international publications.
